The Hollywood Reporter weighs in on this summer’s movie ticket sales:

Summer 2010 won’t set a box-office high, and fewer tickets have been sold than in any swimsuit season in more than a decade.

The industry’s near-flat summer revenue is largely because of a shorter industry season this year, featuring 18 weekends compared to a year-earlier 19. The box-office season ends Monday, with projections showing $4.24 billion in industry coin collected between May 7 and Labor Day, or slightly 1% less than in summer 2009.

But summer admissions are down almost 6%, to a projected 538 million. Hollywood hasn’t marked a new summer admissions high since 2004, when 642 milliontickets were sold, according to the National Association of Theatre Owners.

Exhibitors charged an average $7.88 for summer movie tickets, up 4.5% from $7.54 last summer, NATO said. That compares with an almost 6% ticket-price jump between summer 2008 and last year, when the spread of premium pricing in 3D venues fueled a more dramatic inflation in moviegoing costs.

Summer 2010 produced 11 films that rang up more than $100 million apiece, three fewer than last year. That simply means there were too few attractive films in the market, Corcoran suggested.

“There’s been too much emphasis on the increase in ticket prices,” the NATO spokesman said. “It’s too quick and easy to point to ticket prices and say that’s the reason a summer does better or worse. The difference in almost any year is how attractive the movies are to an audience.”

But, as usual, the summer triggered a few likely franchises.

These days, Edward has competition from more than just Jacob.

Vampires have become a $7 billion industry, according to the Hollywood Reporter, and “Twilight” isn’t the only phenomenon sucking the dough out of your pocket. HBO has a hit with “True Blood,” and the CW’s “Vampire Diaries” has tweens and teens dreaming of undead heartthrobs.

Team “Twilight” reigns supreme, of course. Globally, the three “Twilight” films have earned an unbelievable $1.76 billion at the box office, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Even the low-budget Fox/New Regency “Twilight” parody “Vampires Suck” grossed $20 million in its first six days.

“Gorgeous vampire is the shy 24 year-old
“They are screaming for Edward, not to myself. Then it is easier to take all the hysteria.”

Q: Isn’t it tough to be followed by Paparazzi any where you go?
Rob: I guess I should relax and think “It’s only a pictures taken and posted to tabloids.” and let it go.To tell you the truth, surrounded by 50 Paparazzis 24/7 is really tough. And I have a bad habit to react them with nasty face; I should come up with better look for paparazzi photos by now. Laughs.I am always thankful to my family and close friends; they never change their attitude toward me. They keep me to the ground. Some of them haven’t even seen “Twilight” movies yet! So relieving!

Rob Takes Second in EW’s Sexiest Beast PollComments Off

Posted by Jen // Categories: News,Press //

EWCover

The Entertainment Weekly Sexiest Beast poll brewed a dead heat competition between the vampires and Rob Pattinson as Edward Cullen came in #2 just being squeaked out of the top spot:

“Still, the final Edward-v.-Damon showdown trumped ‘em all. Our polls were open for 72 hours, and midway through the final day of voting, the virile vampires were separated by less than 200 votes. With six hours remaining, and our finalists still locked in a statistical dead-heat, EW.com’s Sexy Beast special-ops team decided to hide our poll results, and began to plan a special issue of Entertainment Weekly commemorating a tournament that had becoming nothing short of an Internet sensation. When the blood, sweat, and broken fangs were wiped away, it was Damon Salvatore who eked out a mild upset victory over Edward Cullen by a margin of 138,630 to 134,728, a difference of just 3,902 votes.”

Movie Star Magazine, of Japan, recently interviewed Rob. The interview is (fairly) short, and rather philosophical. It’s mostly about how he deals with fame. Check it out below!

Q: Do you think that from early on being pushed into the public spotlight has made you more aware than other people that you have to be sure to live your own life?

Rob: It’s true that I was put in a place where I had to be more mindful and take more responsibility for everything. I couldn’t just be aimless. Also, the direction of my career has finally moved in a positive direction and I’ve tried to make a bit of progress. Thanks to the fact that I’ve had the time to think about a lot of things during this period, life itself is now free of the anguish that I felt in my past. I’m also now aware of just how lucky I am. I think that’s why I can enjoy it more and be more aware of what’s interesting to me and experience it all.

Q: When some people attain the kind of enormous success that you have they develop a sense of guilt over how much they’re blessed. Do you have any sense of guilt?

Rob: Sense of guilt? No. I just think it’s luck. I’ve just wanted to get the most out of all my opportunities and build a long career. That’s why now I have my feet firmly planted on the ground and I try to concentrate on the work I’m getting and try to enjoy the situation I’m in without getting bothered by all the stuff that’s happening around me. After all, the most important thing to me as a human and as a professional is to evolve.

Q: Is it possible to realize your own desire to have great acting skills as an actor and only as an actor even when you’re in the midst of all this popularity?

Rob: The majority of people who are criticized by the public for this and that are the people who are constantly putting themselves in the public eye. So I guess that means I could say that it’s better not to show oneself in public too much. I’d like to think that if you work hard to make high quality movies then you won’t be evaluated as a “meaningless celebrity,” but rather by other factors. If you’re seen as a celebrity, then it becomes more difficult to be evaluated based on the level of excellence of the movies you act in. But, to give one example, Johnny Depp has been winning that battle. He’s the kind of person you can’t evaluate based on image right? The object of evaluation is always his acting skills. That requires a lot of self-discipline, and the ability to hide from the public eye has also become important. You just have to get used to that.

Q: If you look back on your current self 10 years from now, what will you think?

Rob: I’ll probably think that I should have enjoyed everything more during this completely amazing moment in my life. But it’s just now that I’ve finally begun to be able to really enjoy everything.

Rolling Stone recently named their top 10 and bottom 5 vampires of film and television. They reviewed the actors’ performances as vampires–not the strength of the vampire characters. Rob barely made the top 10, coming in at number 10 behind Kiefer Sutherland, Nicholas Cage, Alexander Skarsgard, and Ian Somerhalder, among others. Here’s what they had to say about Rob:

Admirers of both sexes might name the Brit actor Number One for his humongous fan base. But as Edward Cullen, he has neither the fangs nor the balls to go for the human jugular when he can hunt Bambi or moon around Bella instead. What Pattinson does have: Byronic good looks that are unfakably hypnotic.

The number one worst vampire according to Rolling Stone was none other than Rob’s on-screen dad, Peter Facinelli.

Well, kind of. McAfee has made this year’s list of “riskiest” celebrities to search for, based on the risk to the user’s computer. Rob is in at the #30 most dangerous. The rankings, according to the internet security company, are based on the “chance of landing at a Web site that’s tested positive for online threats, such as spyware, adware, spam, phishing, viruses and other malware.”

Yes, folks, a battle of the beautiful that began almost a month ago with 64 entrants — vampires and werewolves, mutants and machines, aliens and other creatures (even Ms. Pac-Man!) — has been whittled down to just two combatants: The Vampire Diaries‘ Damon Salvatore and Twilight‘s Edward Cullen. So stop what you’re doing, think deeply about the most important question you’ll ask yourself all day.”

TheStir.com has declared the top vampires of all time and Rob comes in at #2:

“Robert Pattinson: What’s a hot vampire list without the most popular vampire in pop culture right now? Rob plays Edward Cullen in the Twilight movies and falls madly in love with Bella, a human. The love story between the two will make any woman’s heart swoon. Oh, and he sparkles.”
